How to print colouring pages at home

What do you need to print a colouring page?

A colouring-page PDF, a printer and plain A4 paper are enough for most home colouring sessions. A PDF keeps the line art and page layout more stable than a screenshot or a copied web image.

Choose a file that states its paper size. A4 measures 210 × 297 mm. Use a US Letter file only when the printer tray contains US Letter paper.

Read the file name and any page notes before you print. The page size, permitted use and any age guidance apply to that individual printable.

How do you print a colouring page from a PDF?

Open the downloaded PDF in a browser viewer or a PDF app. Choose Print. Select the printer and the paper size before changing quality or scale settings.

1. Load clean paper into the printer tray.
2. Select A4 when the PDF is made for A4 paper.
3. Choose portrait or landscape only when the PDF does not choose the orientation automatically.
4. Check the preview for clipped tails, leaves, borders or other line art.
5. Print one test page before printing a group activity.

Use black-and-white or greyscale printing for line art. Colour ink is not needed for a black-outline colouring page.

Keep the print preview open until the last check. It shows the page orientation, paper size and printable margins together. A quick preview check can save paper when a drawing has been rotated, enlarged or cut off at an edge.

Check that the preview shows one complete page before you continue.

Should you choose Actual size or Fit?

Choose Actual size when the PDF and the paper in the tray use the same page size. Actual size prints without scaling. The preview must show the complete design inside the printer margin.

Choose Fit when the preview crops the design or when the paper size does not match the PDF. Fit changes the scale so the page sits inside the printable area. Adobe documents both settings and explains that Actual size can crop content that does not fit.

Do not use a random custom percentage unless the page includes a scale check. A page that prints too small still works for colouring. A page with clipped line art does not.

Choose one setting and compare the preview again after changing it. Do not assume that a page called A4 will print correctly if the printer has selected a different tray or paper size.

Which paper works for colouring pages?

Use plain printer paper for crayons and ordinary coloured pencils. Test markers on one corner or on a spare sheet first because marker ink can show through lighter paper.

Use a separate sheet behind the page when markers bleed through. Keep the printable flat and dry before stacking finished pages.

Choose the tools before you print a large batch. Crayons and pencils suit most standard paper. Markers need a quick test because the result depends on the paper and the ink.

Why do colouring-page lines look faint or blurry?

Faint lines usually come from low ink, draft mode or a low-resolution image. Use the PDF download when a PDF is available. Choose normal quality before choosing a darker print setting.

Blurry lines usually come from a screenshot or from enlarging a small image. Download the original file. Check the preview at 100% before printing.

Can you print colouring pages for a classroom?

Print a colouring page for a classroom only when the page licence permits classroom use. Check the personal and classroom use licence on the individual printable because permitted use belongs to the specific artwork and file.

Keep the original PDF link private when the licence does not allow redistribution. Print copies for the activity instead of uploading the file to another website.

Use the same check for a club, playgroup or event. A free download does not automatically include permission to share the file beyond the intended activity.
